Rose M. Gypalo, age 74, of Algonquin passed away on Monday morning, September 5th, 2022 in the comfort of her home surrounded by the loving care of her family. Rose was born on July 21, 1948, in Covington, Oklahoma, and was the daughter of the late Wilfred & Mildred (née Wyssmann) Burk.
Rose was a 50-year resident of the Algonquin area. She graduated in 1970 from Emporia State University Teacher’s College in Emporia, Kansas, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. In 1973, she earned her Master’s degree in Home Economics from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. During her 35-year tenure at Dundee Community High School and later Dundee-Crown High School, Rose was a beloved educator who inspired countless students and drove them to succeed. Not being one to sit still, for many years she served as President of the Algonquin Trails Swim Team, and her initial retirement led to a second career as a Sales Associate for many years at J Jill and the Pottery Barn at Algonquin Commons in Algonquin.
Rose was a force of nature, centering her life around family, loved ones and her creative endeavors throughout her life. Her passions included gardening and quilting, spending innumerable hours tending to her garden and ensuring an eye-catching color combination bloomed season-to-season. An avid quilter, Rose was often found hunting for the perfect fabric for herself, her six sisters and numerous friends, to aid in the design and creation of quilts, many of which have been provided to her loved ones, family and friends over the years.
She will be missed by many, including her husband of 49 years, John and their children, Adam and Dessa. Rose is also survived by her siblings: Margaret Guilliams, Carol Buckman, Barbara Finnigin, Wayne Burk, Ruth (Gary) Hanser, Coleen (Jim) Stahl, and Kathryn (Mike Ford) Johnston, as well as many nieces, nephews, friends, former students, and colleagues.
At Rose’s request, the Gypalo family will host a Celebration of Life at their home located at 3 Portsmith Court in Algonquin on Saturday, September 10, 2022, from 3:00 – 7:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation in her memory to the American Cancer Society. Miller Funeral Home in West Dundee is assisting the family with all the arrangements.
