Obituary for Melvin J. Straub

Melvin J. “ Mel” Straub, age 86, a resident of Sleepy Hollow for the past 50 years, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home under the care of his family on Saturday evening, February 25, 2023. Mel was born in Chicago on July 31, 1936, and was the son of the late Melvin J. & Lousie( nee Finlay) Straub. On April 11, 1964, he married his wife Jurate ”Judy” Galesas.

Mel worked in printing for the majority of his professional career. He retired as President of Bruce Offset Printing in Elk Grove Village. He was an avid gardener and especially enjoyed growing roses. He was a longtime member and past president of the Rose Society. Mel was also an avid Model Train enthusiast.
In addition to his beloved wife and best friend of almost 59 years, Judy, Mel is survived by two sons, David (Kristy) and Michael Straub, a daughter, Kristine (Eric) Bowman, and four grandchildren, Nicholas, Ryan, Anna, and Emilie.

Other survivors include his nieces, nephews, and many friends. In addition to his parents, Mel was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Ann Straub.

The Straub family is very grateful to the entire staff of Suncrest Hospice for all of the exceptional care, concern, and kindness which was shown not only to Mel but to his entire family during his last few days.

At Mel’s request, there will be no visitation. He will be cremated. A memorial Gathering/ Celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
