Obituary for John V. Smith
John V. Smith, age 75, of Carpentersville, passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2022, in the comfort of his home and surrounded by his family. John was born on July 1, 1947, in Chicago and was the only child born to the late Roy & Mary Opal(nee Vincent ) Smith. On March 28, 1987, John married the love of his life, Bonnie Robertson. Bonnie preceded John in death on November 16, 2016, after 29 years of marriage.
John was a resident of the Carpentersville area for the past 40 years. Prior to retirement, he was a longtime loyal and valued employee of Meyer Material/ Material Services where he worked as a cement truck driver. John was a very proud U.S. Army Vietnam War Veteran. While in the military he served with the 716th Battalion of the Military Police. He was a former longtime member of the Carpentersville VFW # 5915. John was also a model train enthusiast and a member of the Elgin Model Railroad Club.
Survivors include his son, Bret (Randi Torstenson) Smith and his step-children, Joseph (Barbara) Knaak, Holly Knaak, and Carl (Kathy) Knaak. John is also survived by his grandchildren, Frank, Kristen, Kayla, Alexander, Fallon, Travis, Zoe, Riley, and Joshua.
At John’s request. There will be no visitation or services. He will be cremated and his inurnment will be private. Please omit flowers, memorials may be made to the 716th Military Police BN Vietnam Reunion Committee 520 550th Street in Shelby,Iowa 51570.
