Obituary for Jean M. Ryan

Jean M. Ryan (née Vikse) age 80, of West Dundee, Illinois passed away on November 3, 2022, in Barrington, Illinois. Born on January 21, 1942, in Elgin, Illinois to Helen Drinkall Vikse Nyman and Archie Vikse she was one of three daughters of that union. A lifelong resident of Dundee, she graduated from Dundee High School in 1960. She pursued further education at the Elgin School of Beauty, becoming a licensed Esthetician, Cosmetologist, and Beautician, as well as returning to teach at the school for several years. She greatly enjoyed this career and pursued it until the early 1990s.

On December 28th, 1963 she married the love of her life, and the “literal boy next door”, Tyler Vernon Ryan. They were separated by Tyler’s untimely death on September 29th, 1966, shortly after their daughter Tania was born.

Jean was a highly talented and skilled artist and painter, as well as pursuing her artistic talents in other design and creative areas. She pursued the arts in many ways leaving a legacy of beauty and appreciation. As an avid follower of world events, she maintained a keen interest in these topics right up until her death. Her other passions and hobbies were pursued with zest. Known for her kindness and humor she will be greatly missed by all those who had the good fortune to know her.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband Tyler, her mother Helen R. Nyman, her mother and father-in-law Thelma Hanson Ryan and Thomas Ryan, her sister and brother-in-law Eunice “Tootie” and Conrad Hermann, brothers-in-law Donald Huck, David Culbertson, Jim Winton, brother and sister-in-law, Terence Ryan and Lisa Gallagher Ryan, and nephew Jeremy Ryan.

She is survived by her daughter Tania Ryan, her sister Sharon Huck, and sisters-in-law Musette Ryan Winton, and Nannette Ryan. Nieces Jill Herrman D’Silva (David), Lisa Culbertson Kein (Steven), Dina Culbertson Bentz (Eric), Amy Winton Hubbard (Gunnar), and Nell Ryan, and nephews Andrew Herrman (Lauren), Andrew Winton, and Matthew Herrman (Samantha).

Jean’s burial will be private at the Dundee Township East Cemetery in East Dundee. There be a memorial service and celebration of her life held at a later date. In lieu of flowers or memorials donations may be made to your local arts council or organization - especially those that promote youth participation in the arts.
